La prophétie du yagé

Dans la vallée de Sibundoy, le «taita» Guillermo, médecin et guérisseur de la communauté indigène des Camëntšás, administre du yagé (aussi appelé ayahuasca), boisson aux propriétés hallucinogènes et purgatives. Cette plante permet de guider les guérisseurs dans le traitement des maladies. Voyage dans un monde où la tradition se dispute au charlatanisme.

Une pluie fine et incessante s’épand sur Mocoa, capitale du département de Putumayo, dans le sud de la Colombie. Il est huit heures du matin, la saison des pluies vient de commencer. Quelques années auparavant, il était quasiment impossible d’accéder à la vallée. Le conflit armé entre l’Etat colombien, les guérillas, les paramilitaires et les narcotrafiquants y faisait rage. L’enjeu: les champs de coca, matière première si convoitée de la production de cocaïne. Pendant plusieurs années, le Putumayo a abrité les plus grandes plantations de coca au monde.

En descendant de la voiture, nous enfilons les bottes en caoutchouc que nous venons d’acheter au marché du terminal de Mocoa; indispensables si l’on veut se déplacer sans trop de mal en ces terres gorgées d’eau. Dix minutes plus tard, nous parvenons devant une maison de briques coiffée de tôles en zinc au beau milieu de la végétation. Il s’agit de la maison du taita Guillermo, le médecin de la communauté indigène chez qui nous allons séjourner. Mamá Concha, sa femme, nous accueille et nous montre la chambre où nous allons dormir. Elle nous présente les personnes qui vivent dans la maison et travaillent pour la communauté: son fils Jairo et deux employés, Gaspar Chindoy et un adolescent répondant au nom de Santiago, puis nous donne les noms des cinq chiens et des deux perroquets qui partagent leur quotidien. Ils ne manquent jamais un seul repas.
