«Mes collaborateurs voulaient rallumer la machine et continuer le travail. Je leur ai dit non, on arrête tout. Tout le monde part à la maison.» Pierre Maudonnet était chef d’équipe chez Ilford Imaging. Cette entreprise suisse a fait faillite le 9 décembre 2013. Beaucoup s’y consacraient corps et âme depuis plusieurs décennies. Ils perpétuaient un savoir-faire unique. Pierre Maudonnet demeure calme en ce mois de février 2014, imperturbable, même lorsqu’il évoque ce «jour terrible». «C’est difficile de dire à des collaborateurs qu’il faut partir», reprend-il. Autour de lui, d’anciens collègues observent, écoutent. Pas un mot. Leurs mains cherchent leur menton, ou une tasse de café; quelque chose à toucher. Ils n’interrompent pas ce déferlement de mots empreints d’émotion.

Ils racontent un drame économique et humain. L'histoire de la descente aux enfers d'un joyau de l’industrie photographique. Connu et reconnu, du Japon aux Etats-Unis. Tous les artistes mondialement renommés couchaient leurs plus précieux clichés sur son papier. Et puis le vent a tourné, l’écran digital est arrivé. Les exigences de rentabilité ont changé. Ilford est devenue une machine surdimensionnée pour le marché qu’elle visait.
